A quote that is far lower than everyone else’s is tempting. But a borehole is built mostly underground, where you cannot see what was left out until it starts to fail.

How a Cheap Quote Gets Cheap
Drilling costs money per metre, plus fuel, crew time, materials and testing. When a quote comes in far below the rest, something on this list is usually missing:

What the Numbers Look Like
At our 2026 air drilling rates of KES 6,500 to 7,200 per metre, a 200 metre borehole costs KES 1.3 to 1.44 million to drill. Add KES 50,000 for the survey and about KES 85,000 for permits.
So if someone quotes half that for the same depth, ask what is not included. Often the answer is the survey, the permits, part of the casing, the testing, or the depth itself.
The Real Cost of a Borehole That Fails
- Paying to drill a second borehole, often at a deeper, better surveyed point
- Buying water from bowsers while the problem is fixed
- Replacing pumps damaged by sand or by running dry
- Treating water that was never tested
- Time lost on a farm, a rental building or a business

How to Compare Quotes Fairly
- Ask every driller for a line by line quote
- Compare the same depth, taken from your survey
- Check what the rate per metre includes: casing, screens, gravel pack, development, test pumping, water analysis
- Ask who handles the permits, and at what cost
- Ask what happens if the borehole is dry, and get it in writing
- Check references, photos of their rig and past work
Red Flags: Walk Away If You See These
- A quote far below every other one you received
- “We will get water, guaranteed” with no survey
- No breakdown of what is included
- Full payment demanded upfront
- No written agreement or warranty
