Your borehole water looks clear and tastes fine. But is it safe? The only way to know is a laboratory test. This guide explains borehole water testing in Kenya: what to test, where to test, what it costs and what to do with the results.
Prices and labs in this guide come from official sources and published price lists, linked below. Always call the lab first to confirm current fees.
Why You Must Test Borehole Water
Your eyes can spot mud. Your nose can spot a rotten egg smell. Your tongue can spot salt. That is about it.
Bacteria, fluoride, nitrate and heavy metals are invisible. In parts of Nakuru County, for example, a county study found fluoride of 2.15 to 6.5 mg per litre in Naivasha boreholes, well above the 1.5 mg per litre guideline. Read more in our Nakuru borehole guide.
What to Test, by How You Use the Water
| Use | Minimum tests | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drinking and cooking | Bacteriological plus full chemical | Bacteria cause illness; fluoride and nitrate harm health over time |
| Livestock | Chemical, especially salinity and nitrate | Salty or high nitrate water reduces animal health |
| Irrigation | Salinity (TDS or conductivity), sodium, pH | Salty water damages soil and crops |
| Washing and building | Basic chemical (hardness, iron) | Hard or iron rich water stains and scales |
For a detailed list of the parameters, see our guide to the 7 essential borehole water tests.
Where to Test: Recognised Labs in Kenya
The Water Resources Authority runs ten water testing laboratories, covering six regions plus the Central Lab in Nairobi. NEMA also publishes a list of designated laboratories. Here are some of the labs on that list:
| Town | Laboratory |
|---|---|
| Nairobi | WRA Central Water Testing Laboratories, Industrial Area |
| Nairobi | Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Popo Road, South C |
| Nairobi | Government Chemist Department, near KNH |
| Nairobi | University of Nairobi, Public Health Engineering Laboratories |
| Nakuru | WRA Nakuru Laboratories |
| Mombasa | SGS Kenya, Polucon Services and Intertek |
| Kisumu | Government Chemist, Kisumu Laboratory |
| Eldoret | Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company laboratory |
Pick a lab you can reach on the day you sample. Bacteria tests need fresh samples.
How Much Does Water Testing Cost in Kenya?
| Test | Typical price (KSh) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bacteriological analysis (WRA lab) | 2,000 | WRA |
| Full chemical analysis (WRA lab) | 5,000 | WRA |
| Basic private test (bacteria, pH, turbidity) | 5,000 to 8,000 | IGSL, 2025 |
| Comprehensive private test | 10,000 to 20,000 | IGSL, 2025 |
| Advanced, including heavy metals | 20,000 to 40,000 or more | IGSL, 2025 |
So a drinking water check at a WRA lab, with bacteria and full chemistry, costs about KSh 7,000 in lab fees. Private labs cost more but often add sampling, faster results and advice. Prices change, so confirm before you go.
How to Take a Borehole Water Sample
- Use the sterile bottle the lab gives you. Do not reuse a soda or water bottle.
- Run the pump for 5 to 10 minutes first, so you sample fresh water from the borehole, not water that sat in the pipes.
- Do not touch the inside of the bottle or cap.
- Label the bottle with your name, date, time and location.
- Keep it cool and deliver it the same day if you can.
How to Read Your Results
Your report lists each parameter, your result and the allowed limit. Compare them with the KEBS drinking water standard printed on the report and the WHO guidelines. Here are the results that most often need action:

How Often Should You Test?
- When the borehole is new, before anyone drinks the water.
- Every year for homes.
- Every six months for bacteria if the water is used for drinking.
- After floods, pump or casing repairs, or any change in colour, taste or smell.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does borehole water testing cost in Kenya?
At WRA labs, a bacteriological test is KSh 2,000 and a full chemical analysis is KSh 5,000. Private labs typically charge KSh 5,000 to 40,000 depending on the package.
How long do results take?
It depends on the lab and the tests. Ask the lab when you drop the sample. Bacteria tests need time to incubate, so plan for a few days.
Can I test borehole water at home?
Home strips can check pH, hardness or chlorine, but they cannot confirm safety. For drinking water, use a recognised laboratory.
What if my water fails the test?
Most problems can be fixed. Bacteria can be treated with chlorination and UV, iron with flushing and filters, and fluoride or salt with reverse osmosis. See our water treatment services or borehole repair if the borehole itself needs work.
