A low borehole quote is not always a cheap borehole. The real cost usually shows up in what the quote leaves out.

This guide lists the costs that most often go missing from borehole quotes in Kenya. Where we have them, we use our own 2026 rates, so you can check any quote against real numbers, including ours.
What a Complete Borehole Budget Includes
Start by checking that every line below is either in your quote or in your own budget.
| Item | Typical cost (KES) | Often missing from low quotes? |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogeological survey | 50,000 | Yes |
| Permits (WRA, NEMA, county) | About 85,000 | Yes |
| Air drilling, per metre | 6,500 to 7,200 | Partly: check what the rate includes |
| Mud rotary drilling in loose ground, per metre | About 11,500 | Yes |
| Surface casing where needed, per metre | About 5,000 | Yes |
| Pump and solar system | Quoted after test pumping | Yes |
| Storage: tank or water tower | Depends on size | Yes |
| Water treatment | Only if the analysis shows a need | Yes |
1. The Survey and the Permits
A hydrogeological survey costs KES 50,000 with Bonvic Drilling. It decides where to drill and how deep, so skipping it is the most expensive mistake you can make.
Permits from the Water Resources Authority, NEMA and your county come to about KES 85,000 and take about a month. They are required under the Water Act 2016, so a quote without them is not a full quote. See do you need permits to drill a borehole in Kenya.
2. Depth That Was Guessed, Not Surveyed
You pay per metre, so depth decides most of the bill. A quote priced at 80 metres means little if boreholes in your area are usually 200 metres deep.
The maths is simple. At KES 7,000 per metre, every extra 50 metres adds KES 350,000. Check typical depths in our guide to borehole depth by county in Kenya.
3. The Wrong Drilling Method
Air drilling suits hard rock and most of Kenya. Loose or collapsing ground, common at the coast, needs mud rotary drilling at about KES 11,500 per metre, close to double.
Ask which method your site needs before you sign. Read air vs mud drilling in Kenya to see which one your area is likely to need.
4. What the Rate per Metre Leaves Out
Always ask exactly what the per metre rate includes. Some quotes price only the hole, then add casing, gravel, flushing and testing as extras later.
Our rate includes casing, gravel packing, well development, test pumping and a water quality analysis. Casing choice matters too, so compare options in our PVC vs steel casing guide.
5. Getting the Rig to Your Site
A drilling rig is a large, heavy truck. Soft roads, steep plots, trees or narrow gates can mean preparing a path before the rig arrives, and rain makes this harder.
Check access early and agree in writing who prepares it. It is one of the most common causes of delay on borehole projects.
6. Pump, Solar and Storage
The drilling price gets you a borehole, not running water. The pump is sized from the test pumping results, and most new boreholes in Kenya now run on solar.
Costs vary widely with depth and demand. A community solar pumping system we quoted in Homa Bay County in 2026 came to KES 1.2 million, while a household system is much smaller. You will also need a tank or a water tower. See our solar borehole pump installation guide.
7. Water Treatment
The water quality analysis tells you whether the water is safe to drink or needs treatment. Some areas carry known risks, such as fluoride around Nairobi and Nakuru or salty water near the coast.
Keep some budget aside until the results are in. Learn more in our guide to borehole water testing in Kenya.
8. Upkeep After Drilling
A well built borehole lasts 30 to 50 years, but only with care. Plan for regular water testing and pump servicing from the start. See how often boreholes should be maintained.
Red Flags in a Borehole Quote
- A price far below every other quote you received
- Says a survey is not needed
- No breakdown of what the rate per metre includes
- No mention of permits
- Full payment demanded upfront
- No written agreement, dry hole terms or warranty
How to Make Your Budget Hold
- Start with the survey, then budget from the depth it gives you
- Ask every driller for a line by line quote
- Keep a buffer for the items priced after test pumping: pump, solar, storage and treatment
- Agree payment stages in writing before mobilisation
- Ask what happens if the borehole is dry. With Bonvic, you pay only part of the drilling cost, and the exact terms are written into your agreement before we start
